Durable Medical Equipment

What is Durable Medical Equipment (DME)?

Medical supplies and equipment typically fall under two categories – Durable and Disposable. Durable ones such as braces and monitors, can be used multiple times while the Disposable ones such as blood testing strips and catheters, tend to be single-use.

Medicare typically covers DME that meet the following criteria:
Durable (can withstand repeated use)
Used for a medical reason
Not usually useful to someone who isn't sick or injured
Used in your home
Generally has an expected lifetime of at least 3 years
