What is Durable Medical Equipment (DME)?

Medical supplies and equipment typically fall under two categories – Durable and Disposable. Durable ones such as braces and monitors, can be used multiple times while the Disposable ones such as blood testing strips and catheters, tend to be single-use.

Medicare typically covers DME that meet the following criteria:
Durable (can withstand repeated use)
Used for a medical reason
Not usually useful to someone who isn't sick or injured
Used in your home
Generally has an expected lifetime of at least 3 years

DME that Medicare covers includes, but isn't limited to:

    • Back Brace
    • Knee Brace
    • Ankle Brace, etc.
  • Diabetes-related equipment & supplies
    • Blood Glucose Monitors
    • Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs)
    • Blood Sugar Test Strips
  • Oxygen equipment & accessories
  • Nebulizers & nebulizer medications
  • Infusion pumps & supplies
